Brain Waves, Brain States and Brain Chemicals

Brain Waves, Brain States and Brain Chemicals

When you drop a small stone in water, you see waves. Similarly our heart and our brain have wave patterns. The wave pattern of the heart is measured by ECG (electro cardiograph). The brain waves are measured by EEG (electro encephalograph).
Using the brain wave studies, scientists have discovered that out brain waves are of four types.
The brain waves also have peaks that are similar to the peaks we see in water waves. The number of times the peak appears in one second is called “cycles per second”. (Also called frequency)
  • Beta (13 to 25 cycles per second)

This brain wave indicates that your conscious mind is in control. It indicates a mental state of logical thought, analysis and action. You are alert and awake talking, speaking, doing, solving problems, etc.
  • Alpha (8 to 12 cycles per second)

This brain wave indicates relaxation d meditation. It is a state of relaxed alertness good for inspiration, learning facts faster.

  • Theta (4 to 8 cycles per second)

Deep meditation. This is associated with life like imagination. This is best for suggestibility and inspiration. This brain wave is dominant in children of age 2 to 5.

  • Delta (0.5 to 4 cycles per second)

Deep dreamless sleep. Deep relaxation

Left brain and right brain working together

Usually the left brain and the right brain waves are independent. They reach peaks independent of each other. During meditation and deep relaxation, the left brain waves and the right brain waves happen together for both, the peaks are reached together. This is called synchronization. Scientists now believe that synchronization makes much greater mind power available. This is associated with creativity and learning large amounts of information very quickly.

Brain chemicals

Scientists now believe that there is electrical and chemical basis for every imaginable mental state.

Brain self-control

Scientists had long believed that brain activity such as brain waves and secretion of brain chemicals were beyond conscious control. But, experiments have now changed that belief. Now it is proven that some people can control their brain waves, etc.

Is There Any Limit to Your Memory?

Is There Any Limit to Your Memory?

The following facts show that there is no apparent limit to the capabilities of memory. For all practical purposes the human memory seems to be infinite.

1.
Dreams

Many people have dreamt about friends and relatives whom they have not met for 20 to 40 years. In the dreams, the images are perfect with all colours and details . This shows that there is a huge memory storage somewhere in the brain.

2. Hypnosis and memory

We seem to remember everything that we see, hear or feel. For example, a person in an accident did not remember the car's license-plate number, But under hypnosis, he could tell the correct number. This shows that he indeed had the number stored somewhere in his Brain.

3. Surprise recalls

Everyone has the experience of suddenly remembering some long forgotten memory. For example, some very old incident or some friend.

4. Scientific experiment of connecting wires to patients' brain for memory recall

When scientists connect electrodes (wires) to certain parts of the brain, the patients re-experience certain events as if the events were happening now. This is not just memory recall. This is like re-living the experience. In one experiment, these experiences were as old as 40 years. This shows that the information is stored somewhere in the brain.

5. Near-death experiences

Many people who were very close to death have this experience. They say that their whole life flashed before them. they mean entire, total life and everything in their lives. Even tings that they had forgotten.

6. Photographic memory

Photographic memory means people can, usually for a short time, remember exactly and perfectly, everything they see. This memory fades with time. It can be so accurate that a person can even remember 1,000 separate random dots on a paper. This shows that our short term memory can be perfect.
Scientists now believe that most children have this ability when they are young. But we force them to concentrate too much on logic and language and mathematics and too little on imagination and other mental skills. And as a result, children lose this photographic memory.

Relaxation Methods

Just came across these simple and effective techniques and decided it to share with you people :D. Have a look, you won't regret!

Relaxation Methods

The following two methods of relaxation can be used to:

- Decrease your stress throughout the day.
- Stop your mind from racing when you can't go sleep.
- Relax your muscles and increase concentration throughout the day.
- Lower your brain waves to induce Stage 1 sleep.

Method 1:

Whole body relaxation:
Note: You don't have to remember this whole thing word for word to make it work.
Simply follow the general pattern and... relax.. :o)
Close your eyes
Start by taking a deep breath.
Inhale....count 3 seconds as you inhale...
Exhale...count 3 seconds as you do...
Repeat this process, keep taking deep breaths...
Begin to notice how your abdomen is rising and dropping as you do this.
Notice the weight of your head,
Notice the pressure of your eye brows.
Notice the wetness of your lips.
Notice the tension in the muscles of your cheeks.
Allow your face to relax...
Notice the weight of your whole body...
Feel as your abdomen expands and contracts as you breathe in... and out...
Notice the weight of your arms...
Feel the Weight of your hands...
Become aware of the weight of your fingertips…
Notice the tension in your shoulders and your arms...
Allow your arms to relax...
Notice the weight of your legs...
Notice the tension in your upper legs...
Allow your legs to relax...
Notice the weight of your calves and your feet.
Feel the presence of your big toes...
Now... Notice the weight of your whole body...
With a long sigh of relief,... allow your whole body to relax...

Method 2:

Stress Reduction
If you're faced with a very stressful situation you can use this method to ease a lot of
tension.
Begin by taking a very deep breath in and focusing on your breathing.
Notice how your abdomen expands and contracts as you breathe in and out.
Notice how this makes you feel.
Think about the situation that is making you stressed
Concentrate on the things you're saying to yourself right now repeatedly.
Notice the images that are running through your head.
As these images come into your head, imagine your mind as a big movie screen.
Freeze these images as if they were picture slides.
Think about the way you would want this situation to turn out for you.
Think about the way you would want to feel when this situation is resolved and you
get the result you want.
Allow yourself to form a picture of the end result. See this picture on your movie
screen as if it were a still picture slide. See this picture in 3rd person.
As you see this picture, put a smile on your face and say to yourself
“Mmmmmmmmmm... Yeah...”
Take a very deep breath, and as you take the breath, allow the picture to become
bigger and brighter inside your mind...
Put this picture aside, and create another picture of the result you want, except this
time change the situation around a bit to a later part of you enjoying the result.
Notice how you're smiling in the picture.
Take another deep breath, and allow the picture to become bigger and brighter
inside your mind as you do so.
Next, take the first picture you made… and this time... As you take in a deep breath...
step inside of this picture as if you were there in that place, and play the movie of
your mind of that result taking place. Make sure to smile as you do this.
Take the other picture and repeat the same process. Smiling, and saying to yourself
“Mmmmmmmmmmmm, Yeah... Phew...” You can say this to yourself on the inside if
there are people around.
Notice how everyone in these pictures is smiling, happy and relaxed.
Repeat this process as many times as you want. You will find this is really enjoyable.
At the end of the process, ask yourself: “What steps would I have to take to get that
result?”

Ways to Fool the Examiner - Getting More Marks

Ways to Fool the Examiner For specific type of questions to Get More Marks

Here are some interesting tricks you can try to fool the examiner. Sometimes the examiner is in a hurry, and because he does not read your answers totally, you can even fool the examiner for two specific types of questions:

(1) “list type” questions

These questions ask for lists, such as list of all the states the country), or even all the colors in the rainbow or anything that sort. For such questions, suppose you remember many but do not remember all the names.
For example, there are 25 states in India, but you can write only 23. You do not remember 2. You should not leave the list incomplete. Repeat a few from the unknown list. This technique will work better if part of the answer is on the next left page (try your level best to do that ;) ) So the teacher has to turn the page to get the total list. Suppose you repeat “Rajasthan”, the teacher may notice “Rajasthan and think that it is repeated. But he is in a hurry. He may think that he saw it in the previous answer book and not in this answer book. There is a very high possibility that you will get full marks.

(2) “list-explanation-type” questions

These questions do not just ask the list of names, but these are “essay” type questions. These also ask that you write details for each element/names from the list. Moreover, such questions may take 2 or 3 or 4 or more pages to answer. SO by the time examiner goes to the next page, he will not remember correctly what you had written on the previous page.
Caution: Do NOT use this technique too much. Do NOT repeat too many names in one question, the examiner may find out.

Ways to Enrich your Vocabulary - Improve your Vocabulary in easy ways!

Ways to Enrich your Vocabulary

I will discuss many ways to help you remember more English words and o help you learn more about the words you already know. You can first use those techniques which appeal to you and which look easy to you, then you can learn the other techniques,

You will not develop a big vocabulary just by reading these vocabulary techniques. You need to use them to benefit them.

You understand and know words at two levels. First, you know and understand words when you see them, but you do now normally use them in your own speech or writing. This vocabulary is called passive vocabulary.
Second, you know and understand the words and you also use them in your speech and your writing. This vocabulary is called active vocabulary.
Everyone has a much bigger passive vocabulary as compared to the active vocabulary. Any vocabulary improvement should include techniques to increase both types of vocabularies.

Use a good dictionary

You should use a dictionary to learn new words, their meanings and uses. A common question which people ask is “Which is a good dictionary?” My answer is : it depends on your current level of knowledge.
Get a dictionary that has the words you want to find. A good dictionary should have examples of using words and details about origin of words.
There are many good dictionaries available in almost every bookstore in the world. Among the best are from:
• Oxford University Press
• Cambridge University Press

Learning roots of words
Many English words have roots, prefixes, suffices, For example, the word “ego” is a root. It means “I”. There are many words that have “ego” as a part of them.
“Egoist” has “I” as the main concern. “Egoist” talks about himself all the time. “Egocentric” considers himself as the centre of the universe. “Egomaniac” carries “egoism” to such an extreme that he has an obsession (a mania).

Learning prefixes and suffixes

Prefixes are like “ab” (abnormal), “at” (attain), “di” (divert, divorce), “in” (inactive). Suffixes are like “able” (digestible), “al” (natural), “or” (actor), “ive” (executive). Knowing prefixes and suffixes helps you to remember the meanings of words.

Use the new words you learn
You should use new words to become confident with them.

Read a lot

Reading a lot increases your passive vocabulary. You become familiar and start to understand more words.

Why aerobic exercises are also good for weight control

Why aerobic exercises are also good for weight control

Aerobic exercise refers to exercise that involves or improves oxygen consumption by the body. Aerobic means "with oxygen", and refers to the use of oxygen in the body's metabolic or energy-generating process.

Many types of exercise are aerobic, and by definition are performed at moderate levels of intensity for extended periods of time. To obtain the best results, an aerobic exercise session involves a warming up period, followed by at least 20 minutes of moderate to intense exercise involving large muscle groups, and a cooling down period at the end.

Aerobic exercises are good for weight control or for reducing fat in the body. It is because of the way human body evolved in the jungle. If you need to suddenly run away from danger, you need the energy immediately. The body uses glucose for this purpose. If you continue that activity for about 5 minutes, then the body assumes that you need to continue longer. The body then starts using body-fat for energy. This is why it is important to continue exercising (walking, running, etc.) rather than starting and stopping many times.

How to Take Care of your Eyes

How to Take Care of your Eyes

Eyes are amazing. Light enters your eye through the lens that focus it onto the retina. The retina has about 140 million separate light receivers. These light receivers process hundreds of thousands of light-energy particles per second. See how much work that little thing in your head does all the time and most of you don't even realise it. Whenever you are studying or concentrating on something, you tend to put some pressure on your eyes. Too much pressure for long continuous periods of times can be harmful for your eyes. You need to take care of them.
Here I am giving you some simple but enormously beneficial hints to help relax your eyes when studying or concentrating.

Light

Sunlight is the best for your eyes, When there is not enough sun-light, use comfortably bright light from electricity.

Breathing

When we concentrate, we tend to hold our breath or we stop breathing for a short period. This creates tension in our eyes and our bodies.
When you study or concentrate, make sure that your breathing is relaxed, deep and rhythmic.

Blinking

We naturally close and open our eyes and it is called "blinking". We tend to stop blinking when we concentrate. So make sure that you blink when you are concentrating on something. Also occasionally, look away and blink a few times to relax your eyes.

Palming

This technique is to relax your eyes, Use your palms to cover your eyes without touching the eye lids. Make your palms round like when holding water so that you do not touch the eye lids. Your palms touch your forehead and cheeks so that you feel complete dark.

How to relax Quickly - A surprisingly easy way to fully refresh yourself quickly

The 3 Minute Refreshing Technique

The 3 Minute Refreshing Technique is a simple but powerful technique for relaxation during brief test periods. This technique helps you excel in competitions and get admissions or jobs.

In just 3 minutes, you feel relaxed and in a state in which you feel good, happy, successful and confident. You may do this technique in just 3 minutes or you may choose to take more or less than 3 minutes.

Here are the three steps for you :

  • Step 1. Gently stretch. Stand up. Do these physical movements slowly. Bend forward and take your hands towards the floor. Then slowly stand up. With your hands stretched upwards, slowly bend backward. Do this stretching exercise 3 times. The secret here is not to stretch so much that it aches. Do what is comfortable for you.
  • Step 2. Relax. Sit down. Do not lie on bed because there is a danger of falling asleep. Close your eyes. To breathe deeply, breathe in a way that your stomach moves outward as you breathe in and moves inwards as you breathe out. Breathe regularly and smoothly. Each breath takes about equal time. Do this deep regular breathing for about 6 breaths ( could be more or less than 6).
  • Step 3. Get into a positive, success, learning state. To achieve this do the for thins as mentioned :
    1. adjust your physiology
    2. ask the right questions
    3. focus on results you want
    4. use anchors
These steps will put you in a success state.

Now stop reading this page and do the three steps. Experience the benefits. Do not skip it.
Whenever you are studying, stressful or in any uncomfortable situation, take a rest and use this 3 minute Refreshing Technique during the rest. It will do wonders for your peace of mind. For students, it will enhance your learning ability.

How to get Higher Marks in your CBSE Boards or in any other exam

How to get Higher Marks in your EXAMS

This post isn't about getting 100/100 marks in an exam, rather it sheds some light upon some handy 'secrets' that will help you give your maximum performance in any exam which will eventually boost your scores.
One thing I notice in students these days that they believe that the toppers are the ones which study all time and do nothing else. Well, as a matter of fact, this is not true in every case. I have seen many students getting the highest marks which spend equal time playing and doing all sorts of stuff. So, take out the belief from your mind that if you want to get great marks, you'll have to study all the time.
But that does not mean you have to stop studying! Seriously, if you want to get 100% you'll have to give give your 100%. (I heard that from a teacher a long time ago, and I don't know why but I still remember it very accurately).
So, I guess you should now understand that to get good marks, you'll have to take it seriously but you'll also have to be cool about it at the same time (If you don't want half of your hair to fall off).
Here are some important tips to give you some idea :

1. Exercise

Go out and get some fresh air, and play!. Its the best thing you can do to your body and your brain.Believe it or not, but exercises help increase your concentration, thereby increasing your intelligence and memory! If someone says to you that playing is a waste of time, he is utterly wrong. I do advise you for some outdoor games (Football, Basketball, anything!). You can also try aerobics and yoga if you're interested. Remember - Healthy body, Healthy Mind.

2. Sleep Well

Sleep is essential. During sleep, your body repairs itself. I am not saying you to sleep 8 or 10 hours. Different people need different amount of sleep, some need more than 8 - 10 hours, whereas some may need just 5 or 6 hours. Most people sleep between 6 to 8 hours a day.

3. Eat well

One of the simplest and one of the most important ways to improve the functioning of your brain and the body is to eat healthy good food. By that I mean, food rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals and all sorts of good things! And yeah, pizzas and burgers are not healthy. I am not telling you to stop eating them, but control eating them. Don't eat junk food in excess, only occasionally will be fine.

All these things enhance the performance of your whole body and your brain and will make you more charming and smart too! If you do follow these tips, you will certainly increase your capacity to memorise things and concentrate better on them. You do know how important these things are for getting good grades, don't you?

And last but not the least, STUDY!!!

Study, but in a proper manner. Don't do it in excess , and yeah, do it at least!
Studying in breaks is awesome. According to a research that I read of sometime ago, if you study in half an hour intervals with five minutes break after each period, you tend to memorise things you studied for longer time rather than by studying straight without breaks! Interesting, isn't it? And yeah, make a Timetable if you want. Lot of people find it easier to pay attention to their studies by making a timetable. I personally don't like it, but its up to you to decide what is good for yourself.

As a student you should understand and realize that education and competitive exams are very important for the success of your life. I hope you learned a lot by reading this post.

Thanks for reading, if you find anything wrong with this post, please comment! , and best of luck for your Exams!!!
